Remove.bg Alternatives: 5 Background Removers Compared
Five background removers compared from their own pages: remove.bg, EzCreate, Photoroom, Pixlr and Fotor, with prices, limits and fit checked 2026-10-21.

Jump to the editor ↓Short answer: remove.bg is still a straightforward one-click cutout for a simple background removal, but it is not the only sensible choice. If you want to describe a new background in words instead of leaving a transparent hole, EzCreate fits that job. Photoroom is built for product catalogs, Pixlr puts background removal inside a full layer editor, and Fotor bundles it into a broad editing and design suite. The table and notes below compare what each product's own pages said on 2026-10-21, including prices, free limits and export rules.
We are the EzCreate team, so this is a comparison written by one of the candidates. To keep it checkable, every statement about another product comes from that product's own website on the check date, and the source links are at the end. Where a page did not show a price or a limit in readable text, we say so instead of guessing. Background removal is also a job where the source photo matters more than the marketing copy: hair, fur, glass and motion blur are where tools separate.
What remove.bg does well
remove.bg is a dedicated background remover. Its home page describes removing a background "100% automatically – in 5 seconds – without a single click – for free." You upload a photo and get a cutout; there is no prompt to write and no scene to describe.
The free part is a preview, not a full-resolution download. remove.bg's FAQ says one image requires one credit, preview images are free on remove.bg, and its pricing metadata lists a preview limit of 0.25 megapixels. Full-resolution output goes up to 50 megapixels according to the same page's configuration. The Personal plan was $9 a month for 40 credits, or $8.10 a month when billed yearly ($97.20 a year), when we checked. Professional started at 200 credits for $39 a month ($35.10 a month billed yearly), and business tiers ran up to 75,000 credits.
Two details matter before you commit. Subscription credits are valid only during the subscription month and do not carry over, while separately bought pay-as-you-go credits are separate. The pricing page also displayed a notice that remove.bg's background removal is moving to Canva and that the standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET, so confirm the current status if you are choosing a long-term workflow.
Choose remove.bg when: you need a transparent cutout of one subject, the edges are clean, and you do not want to write a prompt.
How we compared these background removers
We used the same questions for every tool:
- What starts the job? A click on a dedicated remover, a written instruction, or a manual selection.
- What comes out? A transparent cutout, a new scene, or a layered file you finish yourself.
- What does the free tier actually include? A preview, a watermarked export, or a full download.
- What is the lowest real price? The entry plan on the official pricing page, not a trial banner.
- What are the export rules? Resolution, credits, rollover, refunds, and whether the result can be used commercially.
We did not run a pixel-level quality benchmark. Edge quality depends on the photo, and a tool that wins on a portrait can lose on a glass bottle. The fastest way to judge is to run the same three photos through two tools: one person with flyaway hair, one product with a hard shadow, and one object with a soft or reflective edge.
Comparison table
| Tool | Best for | Free start | Entry price on 2026-10-21 | Export notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| remove.bg | One-click transparent cutouts | Free previews | Personal: $9/month for 40 credits; $8.10/month billed yearly | Full resolution uses credits; preview limited to 0.25 MP; subscription credits do not roll over |
| EzCreate | Describing a new background or scene | Upload and preview free | Starter: $4.90 one-time for 140 credits, valid 30 days | Account and purchased credits needed to generate; 2K/4K on supported models |
| Photoroom | Product catalogs and e-commerce | Free trial | Pro: $7.50/month billed yearly | 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports a month; 2K exports on Pro, 4K only on Ultra |
| Pixlr | A full editor with AI tools | Free version without an account | Plus: $2.49/month, or $1.99/month billed yearly | 80 AI credits a month on Plus; subscription credits reset to zero when you cancel |
| Fotor | An all-in-one editor and design suite | Basic plan, free forever | Not shown in the page text we could read | Pro, Pro+ and Max plans; unused credits roll over for up to five months while subscribed |
Prices are the ones each official pricing page displayed on 2026-10-21. Taxes, currency, region, app-store billing and promotions can change them.
EzCreate: replace the background by describing it
EzCreate is a browser workspace where you upload one photo and describe the result you want. For background work, the instruction can be "put the bottle on a white marble counter with soft window light" rather than "remove the background." The hosted model returns a new image with the subject in the scene you described.
That is a different job from a cutout. If you need a transparent PNG to drop onto a pure-white catalog background, a dedicated remover is usually the cleaner first step. If you need the subject to appear somewhere else, with matching light and shadow, a generative background saves a second editing pass. EzCreate's background remover page and change-background tool describe both paths.
The limits, stated plainly:
- Free to try: you can upload a photo and preview it without paying.
- Generation needs an account and credits. A new account receives no signup grant, and daily preview credits alone do not unlock generation. The workspace shows the credit cost before a job starts.
- Entry price: the smallest one-time pack is $4.90 for 140 credits, valid for 30 days; the $9.99 one-time pack gives 300 credits for 30 days. See the pricing page for current packs.
- Output: signed-in accounts can render at 2K or 4K on models that support it, at a higher credit cost. EzCreate does not add its own watermark.
- Retention: uploaded images and generated outputs are deleted after 7 days unless you remove them sooner.
- No layers: EzCreate is not a layer editor. Pixel-exact masking and print layout belong in a desktop editor or a tool such as Pixlr.
The model list includes hosted options such as Seedream, Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, Flux 2 and Qwen Image. Different models handle text, product detail and lighting differently, so test the exact model you plan to use.
Choose EzCreate when: the background is part of the creative result, not just something to delete.
Photoroom: background removal for product catalogs
Photoroom is built around commerce. Its pricing page lists the Background Remover as a core tool included on every paid plan with no credit cost, within fair-use limits. That is a useful distinction: you can run background removal repeatedly without spending AI credits, while credit-based tools such as the Video Generator and AI Backgrounds use a separate allowance.
The Pro plan was $7.50 a month billed yearly, with 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports a month. Max was $20.99 a month billed yearly, with 25,000 credits and 3,000 exports. Ultra was $82.50 a month billed yearly, with 75,000 credits, 10,000 exports and 4K output. Export limits apply to images up to 2K resolution on Pro and Max; 4K is an Ultra feature. Photoroom offers a free trial, but its pricing page did not list a permanent free plan when we checked. Refunds are available up to one week after purchase.
The product fit is narrow and clear: batches, consistent white or studio backgrounds, marketplace-ready exports and catalog workflows. If your job is "remove the background from 300 product photos and keep the edges consistent," Photoroom is designed for that. If your job is "show this product in a specific scene that does not exist yet," a prompt-led tool gives you more freedom.
Choose Photoroom when: you sell products and need repeatable catalog output rather than one-off creative scenes.
Pixlr: background removal inside a full editor
Pixlr is a suite of browser editors rather than a single-purpose remover. Its home page lists a one-click background remover, an object remover, generative fill, generative expand, an AI assistant that edits from natural language, and Super Scale upscaling that it says preserves detail up to 25 megapixels. The Pixlr Editor also has layers, masks and a familiar panel layout.
Its free version is unusually generous on paper: Pixlr's FAQ says the free version works "without requiring an account or any charges." Paid plans add credits, models and an ad-free experience. Plus was $2.49 a month, or $1.99 a month billed yearly, with 80 AI credits a month. Premium was $9.99 a month, or $7.99 a month billed yearly, with 1,000 credits a month. Ultra started at $24.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly.
The trade-offs are the opposite of a dedicated remover. You get more control, but you also get more interface. Subscription payments are not refundable once processed, and subscription credits reset to zero when you cancel; separately bought credit packs do not expire. If you mainly want a cutout in two clicks, the extra panels are friction. If you want to remove the background, add a shadow, place the product on a template and export a layered file, Pixlr keeps all of that in one place.
Choose Pixlr when: you want manual control and AI tools in the same browser editor, and you are comfortable learning the panels.
Fotor: a broad editor with a free tier
Fotor bundles a photo editor, design templates and AI image and video tools. Its tool list includes a background remover, change background, batch editing, an AI photo editor, and a background remover and replacement workflow in its batch tools. That makes it a reasonable alternative if you want one subscription for several kinds of editing rather than a single-purpose cutout.
The plan table listed a Basic plan that is free forever, plus Pro, Pro+ and Max tiers. Unused credits roll over for up to five months while you stay subscribed. The numeric prices were rendered as "US$-" in the page text we could read, so we are not quoting them; check the live pricing page for your region. The free tier also has credit and feature limits, so confirm what a download includes before you rely on it for client work.
Choose Fotor when: you want a general editing and design tool and background removal is only one of several jobs.
When staying on remove.bg is the right call
A dedicated remover still wins in three cases.
First, the job is genuinely just a cutout. If the output is a transparent PNG that will sit on a known background, a one-click tool removes a decision from the workflow. Second, the edges are clean and the subject is well separated from the background. Third, you already have a remove.bg plan and the credit math works for your volume; switching tools has a learning cost that a slightly lower price does not always repay.
The reverse is also true. If you keep reopening the cutout in another editor to add a shadow, place the subject in a scene or match the lighting, the cheaper path may be a tool that generates the final scene in one step. The sunset notice on remove.bg's own pricing page is also a reason to avoid a long commitment there without checking the Canva migration terms.
Which remove.bg alternative should you pick?
- You want a new scene, not a hole: EzCreate.
- You sell products at volume: Photoroom.
- You want layers and manual control: Pixlr.
- You want one broad editor for many jobs: Fotor.
- You only need a clean transparent cutout: stay on remove.bg for now, subject to the sunset date above.
Many workflows combine two tools: a cutout for the clean edge, then a generative or template tool for the final scene. That is often more reliable than asking one model to do both jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free remove.bg alternative?
Pixlr's free version works without an account, and EzCreate lets you upload and preview an image for free before you sign in. Fotor lists a free Basic plan. Full-resolution output or AI generation usually needs an account, credits or a paid plan, so check the export rules before you rely on a free tier for client work.
Can I replace the background instead of only removing it?
Yes. remove.bg and most cutout tools remove the background and leave transparency. EzCreate and Photoroom can generate a new background: EzCreate takes a written instruction, while Photoroom focuses on product scenes and templates. Pixlr and Fotor can also change a background, but you usually finish the result with their editing tools.
Which alternative is best for product photos?
Photoroom is built around product catalogs, with background removal included on paid plans and 2K exports on Pro. EzCreate can create a product scene from a description, and Pixlr is better when you want to finish the layout manually in a full editor. Fotor is a reasonable choice when the same subscription also needs to cover design templates.
Do these tools add a watermark?
EzCreate does not add its own watermark to results. remove.bg, Photoroom, Pixlr and Fotor each have their own plan rules, so check the export settings on the plan you intend to buy rather than assuming a free download is unrestricted.
How much does a remove.bg alternative cost?
Prices vary by model and billing period. On 2026-10-21, EzCreate's smallest one-time pack was $4.90 for 140 credits, remove.bg's Personal plan was $9 a month for 40 credits, Photoroom Pro was $7.50 a month billed yearly, and Pixlr Plus was $2.49 a month or $1.99 a month billed yearly. Fotor did not show numeric prices in the page text we could read.
Can I use the results commercially?
Commercial use depends on the tool's plan terms, the model or provider terms, your rights in the source image, and local law. EzCreate's pricing and terms point you to those factors. For remove.bg, Photoroom, Pixlr and Fotor, read the licence on the plan you buy before using an image in ads, products or client work.
